“Tell me and I FORGET. Teach me and I REMEMBER. Involve me and I LEARN.”
– Benjamin Franklin
Class 4 and 5 students visited the Purple Island, which is located near Al Khor, around 50kms north of Doha. Students were excited to learn about the ecosystem of the mangroves, planted the seedlings and also enjoyed playing the African drum.
Students learned about the basics of ecology (photosynthesis, respiration, interdependence, adaptations) and then mangrove ecology in particular (adaptations in the salt water environment and in low oxygen concentrations).
The intention of the educational trip was to get the students to understand how important a mangrove ecosystem is, explore the different animals that live in the mangroves and to stress the importance of desalinating seawater in an arid environment to allow in sustaining marine life.
By this educational trip students got an opportunity to improve their classifying, communicating and observing skills.
